New Delhi : British tech tycoon Mike Lynch passed away in a tragic accident after a luxury yacht belonging to his family sank off the northern coast of Sicily on Monday

Seven people are believed to have been dead after the 56 metre British-flagged Bayesian sank in the wee hours on being struck by a sudden and powerful storm.

Meanwhile, Morgan Stanley International Chair Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy were also found dead in the yacht wreckage.

The yacht which was carrying 22 people- 12 passengers and 10 crew-sank off the port of Porticello, near Palermo.

As per reports, the yacht was anchored to the sea bed outside the harbour at Porticello when a high fierce storm struck it  and cause the vessel to disappear in the waters.

The violent storm caused waterspouts, or rotating columns of air and mist, to appear over the sea.

However, fifteen of the 22 people who were on board were rescued from the boat.

The bodies of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah have also been found from the wreckage of the Bayesian by scuba divers who have been working around the clock to search and pull up dead bodies from the waters.

The Bayesian, which was owned by Lynch's wife, was built by Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008 and last refitted in 2020.

It had the world's tallest aluminium mast, measuring 72 metres, according to its makers.

It may be mentioned that Mike Lynch, known as the “British Bill Gates” was a British technology entrepreneur who co-founded Autonomy Corporation and founded Invoke Capital. He then became a co-founder, alongside Invoke Capital, of the cybersecurity company Darktrace.

Lynch was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 2006.

In 2011, he was appointed to the science and technology council of then-Prime Minister David Cameron.

Lynch was also elected as a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2008 and the Royal Society in 2014.
