Tripura sees major drop in infant and maternal deaths, says CM Manik Saha

Guwahati: Tripura has seen a significant drop in infant and maternal mortality rates, Chief Minister Manik Saha said on November 8, citing the state’s focused investment in healthcare infrastructure and services as the reason for the progress.

Addressing the 19th annual conference of the Tripura chapter of the Association of Surgeons of India at the KLS Auditorium of Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital, Saha highlighted the “unprecedented improvements” in the state’s healthcare system in recent years.

The Chief Minister noted that several complex medical procedures, previously unavailable in Tripura, are now being successfully performed.

“Kidney transplants are now being done in the state, and steps are being taken to make liver transplants possible as well,” he said. He added that the government aims to ensure residents no longer have to travel outside the state for advanced treatments.

Saha stressed that the administration is working to build public confidence in the healthcare system through modernisation and improved accessibility.

Both urban and rural healthcare are being strengthened, with new trauma centres and upgraded facilities being developed in district and sub-divisional hospitals.

“The decline in infant and maternal mortality rates reflects the continuous improvements in health services,” he said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare at all levels.

He also announced that telemedicine services are being expanded at Agartala Government Medical College to enhance patient access. “Authorities have been instructed to set up a studio to help patients benefit more effectively from telemedicine,” he added.

During the event, two doctors were honoured for their exceptional contributions to medicine, and a medical student received recognition for outstanding academic performance.

Saha concluded by reiterating that the government’s goal is not only to modernise healthcare but also to make quality medical services accessible to every resident of Tripura.
