Tripura: Nine students held after overnight vandalism spree in Agartala
Guwahati: Several areas of Agartala in Tripura woke up to scenes of destruction on Saturday morning, November 29, after a group of youths allegedly went on a violent spree and damaged public property along their route.
New Capital Complex SDPO Subrata Barman said the youths moved through multiple locations in the city, tearing down flags, festoons and banners. They also uprooted traffic glow signboards and even stole kilometre indicator boards, leaving parts of the city’s traffic infrastructure in disarray.
The incident surfaced only after videos of the vandalism spread widely on social media. Once the footage began circulating, police analysed CCTV recordings from several spots and quickly identified those involved. A team later detained nine youths linked to the rampage.
“All nine have admitted that they carried out the vandalism while under the influence of alcohol,” SDPO Barman confirmed.
Police have already registered a case, while the Tripura Traffic Unit has lodged a separate complaint. The arrested individuals are scheduled to be produced before the court today.
Investigators further revealed that all nine detainees are college students who were returning home after attending a programme on the night of November 28.
Authorities are now assessing the overall damage and determining additional legal measures to ensure such incidents do not recur.
