Agartala: In a groundbreaking ruling, the District and Sessions Court of Gomati district has pronounced a verdict, sentencing Rajib Karmakar to 12 years of imprisonment for the kidnapping and sexual assault of his sister-in-law.

Addressing the matter, Paltu Das, the Special Public Prosecutor of Gomati District Court, stated that the court delivered the judgment on Monday following an extensive trial that involved testimonies from 16 witnesses.

According to Das, Rajib Karmakar, residing in Amarpur's Fatik Sagar area of Gomati District, subjected his wife to abuse and made inappropriate advances towards his sister-in-law.

When his sister-in-law resisted his advances, Karmakar resorted to violence against his wife.

The situation escalated on June 3, 2021, when Karmakar orchestrated the dispatch of his wife to a relative’s house near Agartala.

Seizing the opportunity, he forcibly kidnapped his sister-in-law while she was en route to a tutor’s house and transported her to Chennai.

There, Karmakar rented a house and continued to cohabit with his sister-in-law, subjecting her to multiple instances of forced sexual assault, as reported by the Special Public Prosecutor.

The egregious acts came to light when Karmakar’s father-in-law filed a case with Kakraban Police Station.

Upon their return to the state, Rajib Karmakar was apprehended at the airport.

The investigating officer diligently compiled evidence and presented a charge sheet to the court, initiating the trial process.

On Monday, the court found Karmakar guilty on various counts, including kidnapping under Section 363 of the Indian Penal Code, resulting in a three-year prison sentence, a fine of Rs 3,000, and one month in jail in default.

Additionally, he was convicted under the POCSO Act, leading to a 12-year imprisonment term, a fine of Rs. 10,000, and three months imprisonment in default, added Das.
