Assam: 13 state boxers secure medals in talent search event
Guwahati: As many as 13 boxers from Assam have secured medals by advancing to the semifinals of the ‘REC National Open Talent Search Boxing Championship’ being held at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) regional centre’s indoor stadium in Assam’s state capital Guwahati.
The tournament is being organised by the Assam Amateur Boxing Association with support from the Boxing Federation of India (BFI).
In the quarterfinals of the 48 kg category for youth women, Assam’s Bharati Kumari progressed to the semifinals by defeating Manipur’s Renuka Devi.
In another quarterfinal of the same weight category, Assam’s Rimpi Pegu secured a medal by overcoming her state rival Nancy Borah.
In the 51 kg category quarterfinal, Assam’s Monika Chubba advanced to the semifinals by defeating her teammate Aishree Hazarika.
However, in other weight categories for junior women, seven boxers from Assam faced defeat.
In the 60 kg category quarterfinal of the youth men’s division, Assam’s Junaid Anan advanced to the semifinals by defeating Haryana’s Tushar.
In the 70 kg category, Assam’s Yuvraj Yadav triumphed over Andhra Pradesh’s Sai Praneeth Reddy.
Assam’s Ganga Rabha also secured a win against Haryana’s Nishant in the 70 kg quarterfinal while Akash Kachari ensured a medal by overcoming Haryana’s Aryan Choudhury in the 85 kg quarterfinal.

In the elite men’s category, Assam’s sole boxer Khela Kharananda progressed to the semifinals in the 86 kg category by defeating West Bengal’s Prem Prasad in the quarterfinal.
Meanwhile, five boxers from Assam in the elite women’s division also secured medals by winning their quarterfinal matches.
Dweepanjali Daimari defeated Delhi’s Mahek Dara in the 48 kg category? while Bhupali secured a victory in the 50 kg quarterfinal against Uttar Pradesh’s Rashi Sharma.
Sumitra Brahma overcame Uttar Pradesh’s Neelam Chauhan in the 54 kg category while? Manju Basumatary defeated Haryana’s Bishu Rathi in the same weight category.?
Monalisha Basumatary also triumphed over Madhya Pradesh’s Divya Nagar in the 57 kg category - all advancing to the semifinals.
The competition will continue until September 30 featuring events for youth and elite men and women.
After the conclusion of these matches, competitions for boys and girls in all weight categories for sub-juniors and juniors will be held.
All boxers who advance to the quarterfinals will qualify for the final round.
Additionally, medal-winning boxers from the final round will be selected for advanced training at the national camp.
The BFI will award prize money to each medallist from the open competition.
