NE India’s biggest oyster mushroom processing plant launched in Meghalaya

Shillong : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday inaugurated the biggest oyster mushroom processing plant at Mendipathar in North Garo Hills.

In a bid to benefit around 1000 farmers of the state, the facility has been constructed at a cost of Rs. 10 crore.

The project is being implemented by the Mendipathar Multipurpose Cooperative Society, led by Sister Rose, and is funded by the SFRUTI scheme from MSME, with viability gap funding of Rs. 3 crore from the state government.

 Mushroom will be dried, powdered, and packaged and branded for export in the facility.

Speaking on the occasion, Conrad Sangma said that the demand for mushrooms is rising globally and this project will be extremely rewarding for the farmers of Meghalaya.

“Inaugurated the Oyster Mushroom Cluster in Mendipathar, North Garo Hills. The Rs.10 crore project funded by the Government is being implemented by the Mendipathar Multipurpose Cooperative Society," Sangma said in a post on Facebook.

"Through this initiative close to 1000 farmers in its first phase will benefit,” he added.

“The demand for mushrooms is on the rise globally, and this project will provide our farmers with an opportunity to take advantage of the market.

" Our government is committed to provide training, support and assistance to individuals and organisations to benefit from this initiative,” he added.

The chief minister also flagged off vehicles and equipment to support rubber collection in North Garo Hills.

Meghalaya has altogether earmarked Rs. 62.37 crore for Mushroom Mission for five years.
