Guwahati: Senior UDP leader Mayralborn Syiem expressed uncertainty about whether the Voice of the People Party (VPP) can supplant other regional parties in Meghalaya.

He said that the VPP's true test will be in the upcoming elections for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council.

Syiem acknowledged that the UDP and other regional parties had underperformed in the last Lok Sabha elections, attributing their poor results to their alliances with the BJP.

He added that any decision regarding the UDP's relationship with the BJP would be made by the party's high command.

Highlighting the current era of coalition politics, Syiem pointed out that even the BJP required the support of smaller parties to establish a government at the Centre.

He also said that the last time a single party, the All Party Hill Leaders Conference, secured a majority to form a government on its own was in 1972.

Syiem stated that coalitions necessitate compromises and adjustments among parties, creating a dynamic of push and pull in politics.
