Guwahati: The Meghalaya government has faced criticism and potential project cancellations due to its struggles with land acquisition for crucial road projects.

Following a meeting with the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma acknowledged the Ministry's concerns regarding the slow pace of land acquisition in Meghalaya.

While the state is nearing completion on land acquisition for the Shillong Western Bypass, some stretches remain problematic.

The Ministry also raised concerns about unresolved forest clearance issues, though the Chief Minister assured that 90 per cent are resolved and the remaining will be settled within a few months.

MoRTH expressed strong disapproval of the delays and suggested bypassing areas with significant land acquisition hurdles.

Sangma further revealed concerns surrounding the ambitious four-lane Umiam-Silchar road project, where initial surveys for the high-speed corridor are stalled in certain sections.
