Guwahati: The Meghalaya Rural Tourism Forum (MRTF) has called for urgent government intervention to protect the state’s tourism industry after a recent blockade by the Hynñiewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) disrupted travel to popular tourist spots.

The forum, representing various tourism stakeholders from across Meghalaya, convened on Friday to express deep concern over the HNYF's actions, which they argue have jeopardized the livelihoods of countless people dependent on the tourism sector.

MRTF Chairman Alan West Kharkongor emphasized the importance of peace and security for the growth of tourism and urged authorities to prevent activities that instill fear in visitors.

The forum also highlighted the need to address issues related to local transportation and the development of better infrastructure, such as an airport, to boost tourism.

Tourism businesses in Pynursla, one of the affected areas, have strongly condemned the blockade, stating that it has damaged the region's reputation as a welcoming destination.
