Meghalaya: TMC & Congress condemns ‘harassment’ of nun in Assam
SHILLONG: Meghalaya's opposition Congress and Trinamool Congress (TMC) expressed grave concern and strongly condemned the reported incident of harassment against a nun in Assam.
Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma informed the state’s assembly that the government is aware of the case and has raised the issue with Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, who assured prompt action.
“However, as the nun is still in shock, the government is unable to obtain all details of the incident such as the bus number. We only have information regarding the date, time, and location; the bus number is unknown,” stated Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma.
During a Zero Hour notice in Meghalaya assembly, former Speaker and TMC legislator Charles Pyngope revealed that a nun serving in South Garo Hills faced harassment at Goalpara in Assam, while traveling from Dudhnoi to Goalpara on February 17.

Sister Rosemary boarded a bus at 11 am from Dudhnoi and paid the fare up to Goalpara. However, the bus conductor and some passengers began making derogatory remarks about her religious attire and faith. Eventually, the nun was compelled to disembark at an isolated location.
Pyngrope emphasized that the incident left the missionary nun profoundly shaken, causing immense mental anguish and harassment.
He described such behaviour as “uncalled for” and “unheard of”, calling for immediate intervention by the Meghalaya government with the Assam authorities.
Meghalaya leader of the opposition Ronnie V Lyngdoh also submitted a memorandum to the Meghalaya chief minister on the matter through the Speaker.
