Meghalaya: Society approaches HC over Mawjymbuin Cave pilgrimage dispute

Guwahati: The High Court of Meghalaya has stepped in to resolve a dispute over the annual pilgrimage to the revered Mawjymbuin Cave in Mawsynram, after a registered society, Yatra, approached the court seeking intervention.

The society alleged that the authorities had denied them a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the pilgrimage, despite their compliance with conditions and permissions granted since 2011.

The court, after reviewing the case, directed the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, to send a responsible officer to inform the respondents to appear in court, along with the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, to resolve the matter urgently.

The court emphasized the sensitive nature of the issue and the need for prompt consideration.

The petitioners claimed that they had obtained initial permission from the district administration but were denied the necessary NOC by the Dorbar Shnong, Mawsynram, without explanation.

They assured the court that their intention was not to establish a place of worship or create disturbances, but only to perform a traditional ritual of sprinkling water on the lingam.
