Guwahati: The National People's Party (NPP) in Meghalaya has fired back at the Voice of the People Party (VPP) over allegations of corruption against its president, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit.

Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi, a senior NPP leader and Rajya Sabha member, accused the VPP of "lecturing" others on character despite its own leader facing serious allegations.

Kharlukhi was responding to VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh's recent comments questioning the NPP-led government's ability to conduct fair examinations.

Myrboh had suggested appointing individuals with impeccable character to the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) ¹.

The NPP leader said that the VPP should focus on pursuing the case against Basaiawmoit, who faces allegations of theft, cheating, forgery, and misappropriation of funds during his tenure as chief executive member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.

A former Umsning MDC, Donkupar Sumer, filed an FIR against Basaiawmoit, accusing him of siphoning off public money under the guise of acquiring land for the council.

Kharlukhi also claimed that the people's mandate was in favour of the NPP in 2018 and 2023, stating that the VPP will have to wait for its turn if "it ever comes".

The NPP leader criticized the VPP's attempt to question the eligibility of a rank holder and law graduate for the MPSC, calling it a "shameless idea."
