Guwahati: With the ongoing rainfall across the region, at least three people were killed in Garo Hills of Meghalaya on Friday night.

The heavy rain followed by landslides claimed the lives of three individuals and left four others injured.

The victims, identified as Santa N Marak (57), Sarika M Marak (18), and Miardo P. Marak (5), lost their lives in landslides that struck their homes in Koinabui, Kharonggre, and Sorokpara villages, respectively.

According to official sources, the floods and landslides have affected 2,364 people across 17 villages, with multiple roads rendered impassable. The situation remains dire, with the Primary Health Centre in Silkigre submerged in water and staff stranded.

Villagers have come to their aid, providing assistance until relief teams can access the area.

Rescue efforts are underway, with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) deploying teams from Tura and Shillong.

However, one team was temporarily stuck due to a landslide while en route to Dalu.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a forecast, predicting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in West Garo Hills over the next 24 hours.

The State Disaster Management Authority has cautioned citizens to exercise extreme caution, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and potential flash floods.
