Meghalaya: KSU to continue monitoring migrant labourers till new law implementation

Guwahati: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) claimed that it will maintain its vigilance on migrant labourers until the state government implements the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and the amended Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA).

The KSU has also proposed incorporating clauses from the Inter-State Migrant Workmen Rules 2011 into the Meghalaya Identification Registration (Safety & Security) of the Migrant Workers Act.

The suggested clauses include police verification of migrant labourers from their place of origin and stricter penalties for violating contractors, including imprisonment.

The state cabinet has assured the KSU that it will introduce these measures in the Assembly, including a fine of Rs 1 lakh and three months imprisonment for future violations.

Meanwhile, the Federation of Khasi Jaintia Garo People (FKJGP) has expressed support for the state government's decision to amend the Meghalaya Identification, Registration (Safety and Security) of Migrant Workers Act 2020.

The FKJGP president, Dundee Khongsit, welcomed the move, stating that it will help regulate influx and prevent individuals with criminal records from entering the state.
