Meghalaya high court fixes Aug 14 for next hearing on Mawjymbuin Cave dispute

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya high court has scheduled August 14 for further proceedings in the ongoing case concerning the conduct of rituals inside the Mawjymbuin cave in Mawsynram.

The court expressed its preference for an amicable resolution between the local governing body, Dorbar Shnong, and the petitioner, Yatra, a registered organization that has organized pilgrimages to the cave for worshiping the Shiva Linga from 2011 to 2023.

In a recent hearing, the court noted the presence of the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of East Khasi Hills District, as well as representatives of the respondents involved in the dispute.

After hearing from Respondent No. 7, representing Respondents No. 6, 7, and 8, and following discussions with the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police, the court found it necessary to grant additional time for the parties to seek a resolution.

The issue at hand is the granting of a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the annual pilgrimage to Krem Mawjymbuin.

The court expressed hope that the parties would reach a mutual agreement before the next hearing.

The court's order stated, "Let this matter be listed on 14th August, 2024, to enable the parties to apprise this Court with regard to their decision. This Court expects that an amicable solution be arrived at before the next date."
