SHILLONG: The annual pilgrimage to Mawjymbuin Cave in Mawsynram in Meghalays has been called off this year due to unresolved issues.

The Yatra, a registered society that organizes the event, made the decision after the local governing body, the Dorbar Shnong, expressed its inability to reach a resolution in time.

The decision was announced during a hearing at the Meghalaya High Court on Wednesday.

The court has since ordered the formation of a committee to oversee the management of the Mawjymbuin Cave, considering its significance as both a sacred site and a tourist attraction.

According to the court, the respondents, who had been given time to resolve the matter of granting a No Objection Certificate for the pilgrimage, were unable to do so due to time constraints.

H Rapsang, the assistant headman and spokesperson of Mawsynram village in Meghalaya, acknowledged the cave's importance and requested additional consultations to establish procedures for peaceful visits to the site.

S Jindal, the petitioner's counsel, agreed that the lack of time may have hindered a resolution and concurred that the pilgrimage should be called off this year pending further developments.

The court expressed regret that no agreement could be reached to allow the pilgrimage, which is sacred to the organizers.

However, it noted the organization's willingness to postpone the event until a resolution is found.

In response, the court directed the deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills district to propose members for a committee that will examine how to manage the cave, taking into account its sanctity, environmental impact, and religious significance.

The list of committee members is expected to be submitted by August 22, 2024.

Additionally, the court issued a warning against those spreading misinformation or making threats related to the use of the holy site.

The Superintendent of Police for East Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya has been instructed to place a police presence near the cave to ensure security.

Further hearings and decisions on the matter are expected in the coming weeks.
