Guwahati: Manipur Congress president Keisham Meghachandra Singh on Friday stated that the involvement of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) will not address the ongoing crisis in the State.

He emphasized that resolving the turmoil requires political solutions led by the government, accountability from administration, and confidence-building measures for affected communities.

Reacting to the three-day visit of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Singh criticized the focus of the trip. “Any visit that prioritizes organisational expansion over the suffering of the people sends the wrong message,” he said.

“The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has taken note of Mohan Bhagwat’s visit to the State. Manipur continues to suffer from ethnic violence, displacement, social divisions, and administrative breakdown. At this critical time, the people expected the Central Government to present a concrete plan to restore peace and normalcy,” Singh posted on X.

He added, “Instead of addressing the humanitarian crisis and governance failures, the visit appears to prioritize the growth of RSS organisational activities in Manipur.” Singh reiterated that strengthening ideological organisations cannot replace real governance, and will not bring lasting peace to the State.

The Congress leader outlined the measures he believes are necessary to resolve the ethnic crisis: a clear roadmap for peace, a unified command structure, plans for the safe return of displaced families, and accountability for administrative lapses. “MPCC reiterates that the focus must remain on restoring normalcy, protecting all communities, and delivering justice to victims,” he said.

Singh further warned that Manipur needs healing, not polarization, adding, “Political or ideological visits cannot substitute effective governance. Prioritizing organisational growth over people’s suffering sends the wrong signal at this sensitive time.”

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat arrived in Imphal on Thursday, marking his first visit to the State since the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023.

During his stay, Bhagwat will hold closed-door meetings with RSS members to review the organisation’s activities in the Northeast. He is also scheduled to interact with entrepreneurs, tribal leaders from the Manipur hills, prominent citizens, and youth organisation leaders.

Manipur has remained under President’s Rule since February after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned amid criticism of his administration’s handling of the ethnic violence, which has claimed over 260 lives.
