Guwahati: The Manipur Institute of Management Studies (MIMS), Manipur University, Canchipur, organised a Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) on the theme “India’s Strategic Partnership in the East” on Tuesday as part of the Ministry of External Affairs’ outreach initiative.

The event aimed to deepen understanding of India’s strategic partnerships with neighbouring and ASEAN countries and inspire students to build a self-reliant nation (Atmanirbhar Bharat) to realise the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

Former diplomat Professor (Dr.) Jitendra Nath Misra, retired member of the Indian Foreign Service and former Ambassador to Portugal and Laos, attended the programme.

Other distinguished participants included Prof. G.P. Prasain, Former Vice-Chancellor of Tripura University and Head of the Department of Commerce, MU; Prof. Memcha Loitongbam, Dean, School of Social Sciences; Prof. Laishram Prabhakar Singh, Director, MIMS; and T. Shantikumar Singh, Controller of Examinations, Manipur University.

Ambassador Misra discussed Manipur’s potential in the service industry and sports economy, as well as its pivotal role in India’s Act East Policy.

Drawing from his diplomatic experience and Kautilya’s philosophy, he explained India’s efforts to build peaceful and mutually beneficial relations with countries such as China, Vietnam, the Philippines, and the United States.

He urged students to uphold diligence, integrity, and compassion while contributing to a self-reliant India.

Prof. Laishram Prabhakar Singh emphasised the need for deeper engagement between India and ASEAN nations through connectivity, cooperation, and shared growth.

Prof. Memcha Loitongbam highlighted Manipur’s strategic position in advancing India’s Act East Policy, while Prof. G.P. Prasain underlined India’s cordial relations with neighbouring countries and the potential benefits for Manipur.

More than 150 students attended the lecture, which enhanced their understanding of global and strategic issues, promoting student-centric learning at Manipur University.
