Assam: Tezpur University reschedules end-term exams amid intensifying anti-corruption stir

Guwahati: Tezpur University in Assam has announced to reschedule its end-term examinations as a growing student movement against alleged corruption and administrative misconduct continues to paralyse campus operations.

This is the first time in the institution’s history that academic schedules—particularly end-term exams—have been formally altered due to a student-led protest targeting the university’s top administration.

The agitation, which began in September, has escalated sharply over the past week, leading to a near-complete shutdown of both academic and administrative activities.

Students, backed by sections of the teaching and non-teaching staff, are demanding accountability for alleged financial irregularities and arbitrary decision-making under Vice Chancellor Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, who has reportedly been absconding amid the turmoil.

With regular functioning halted, the university administration said it had no option but to postpone the upcoming examinations.

Officials stated that the rescheduling aims to ensure students do not suffer academically while the campus remains under widespread agitation.

Fresh examination dates will be notified only after administrative normalcy is restored and the university receives guidance from the Union Ministry of Education.

Student leaders said the disruption of exams underscores the seriousness of the crisis triggered by allegations of corruption at the highest level of the university’s administration.

They argued that while the postponement is inconvenient, it is a necessary consequence of their efforts to push for structural reforms and protect the institution’s integrity.

As protests continue, the rescheduling of exams marks a significant moment in the university’s history, reflecting the scale of the unrest and the pressure on authorities to address long-standing governance concerns.

Students have reiterated that the movement will continue until the Ministry of Education intervenes decisively.
