Imphal: The Manipur Police's anti-vehicle lifting squad has arrested a member of a newly formed vehicle-lifters’ gang, allegedly involved in several theft cases, during a drive to curb offences related to motor vehicles. Police also recovered a stolen vehicle during Thursday’s operation, officials reported on Friday.

Acting on intelligence inputs suggesting that members of the gang were planning to carry out their activities, a team from the Singjamei police station laid a trap.

The police arrested one member of the gang from Kwakeithel Sangaiprou Mamang Leikai under the Singjamei police station in Imphal West district, in connection with an FIR registered earlier.

The arrested person was identified as Md. Asad (29), a resident of Kairang Awang Leikai in Imphal East district. Based on his disclosure during interrogation, police recovered a DI Tata Yodha bearing registration number NL07AA/0711, which had been stolen earlier.

Reports stated that other criminals involved in the crime are still absconding, and efforts are underway to arrest them at the earliest.

Police added that they have registered a criminal case under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 in connection with the stolen vehicle and have initiated further legal proceedings.
