Imphal: Manipur Police and the Excise Department have intensified efforts to combat the illegal trade of alcohol across the northern parts of the state, leading to the arrest of two individuals for possessing and attempting to distribute illicit liquor.

More than 4,100 litres of distilled indigenous country-made liquor, locally known as Sekmai Yu, a fiery local brew, were destroyed in the northern Senapati district, officials reported on Thursday.

A team from Tadubi Police Station, led by the Officer-in-Charge, along with the escort party, conducted routine frisking and checking at a petrol pump located 0 km south of Tadubi PS, Senapati, on Wednesday.

During the operation, a red Alto (MN08A-0175) was intercepted on suspicion. A thorough inspection led to the recovery of 140 litres of locally distilled liquor concealed inside the vehicle.

The vehicle was driven by Heni Heshu (S/o Heni) and accompanied by Mrs. Stephen Helina (30 years), both residents of Tunggam Khullen Village, Senapati.

The case has been duly entered in GD No. 17/TBI-PS/2025 (19.11.2025).

Following due procedure, the seized items were handed over to the Excise Department, Senapati, for necessary legal action.

The police report further stated that approximately 4,110 litres of country liquor, valued at Rs 4.11 lakh in the local market, were confiscated and destroyed under Section 69 of the MLP Act, 1991, at Senapati Excise Station, in the presence of Excise officials, police personnel, media representatives, and members of the public.

The seized liquor was collected and destroyed through coordinated efforts between the Excise Station, Senapati, and the Senapati Police Department, under the supervision of the Commissioner of Excise, Government of Manipur.
