Guwahati: The two Meitei youths who militants allegedly abducted were safely released on Thursday, informed Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

Oinam Thoithoi Singh and Thokchom Thoithoiba Meitei were abducted by armed militants on September 27 from Kangpokpi district.

They are now in police custody for further proceedings.

It has been reported that the youths were released in exchange for 11 militants.

However, a detailed statement is still to be released.

The abduction had sparked widespread outrage, leading to a shutdown in five districts of Imphal Valley called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC).

The shutdown severely impacted normal life in the region.

The three youths were traveling to New Keithelmanbi for an SSC GD recruitment test when they were allegedly abducted. One of them, Ningombam Johnson Singh, was rescued by the Assam Rifles earlier.

A video of the captives pleading for release had also surfaced online earlier.

This is a developing story, further details will be updated.
