Guwahati: Allegations of widespread discrimination against non-local students have surfaced at a private medical college in Manipur's Imphal West district, amidst ongoing violence in the state.

According to sources, students from areas outside Manipur's valley region have reported instances of bias and prejudice by college authorities. Speaking on condition of anonymity, some students claimed that those hailing from outside the state or from non-valley regions have been unfairly targeted.

Instances of alleged discrimination range from practical exams to internal assessments, with students asserting that their performance has been adversely affected. Specifically, subjects such as microbiology, physiology, and pathology have been cited as areas where bias is evident.

Expressing concern over the situation, a student from Assam highlighted the disparity in exam results between valley-based students and those from other regions. Despite the threat of retaliation, many affected students are considering protests against the college administration, fearing repercussions on their academic careers.

It may be mentioned that the recent ethnic violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur has further exacerbated the plight of non-local students. Displaced by the conflict since May last year, many students have been unable to attend classes or sit for exams, significantly impacting their academic progress.

One student pointed out that the college, located in Imphal, a predominantly Meitei-dominated valley district, disproportionately affected Kuki students amidst the unrest.

While the Meiteis primarily inhabit the valley districts, the hills are predominantly occupied by tribes such as the Kukis and Nagas. The allegations of discrimination have stirred controversy, prompting calls for accountability and fair treatment within the academic institution.

Northeast Now is looking into serious allegations of unfair treatment by authorities at the medical college in Manipur. We will publish a comprehensive report upon completion of our investigation.
