Manipur: Gold smugglers caught at Imphal Airport, worth Rs 44 lakhs seized

Imphal: Two suspected gold smugglers were arrested at Imphal Airport in Manipur on Monday, (October 21, 2024), after authorities seized gold worth approximately Rs 44 lakhs in the regional market.

A joint operation by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the Anti-Smuggling Unit of the Customs Division Imphal led to the arrest.

Acting on intelligence reports, the teams targeted two individuals who were attempting to board an Indigo flight to Guwahati.

During routine security checks, CISF personnel discovered two gold chains, totaling 623.52 grams, hidden in the suspects' hand baggage.

The chains, valued at approximately Rs 44 lakhs in the regional market, were detected using X-ray scanners.

The arrested individuals, Lourembam Ramananda Mangang and Kshetrimayum Gulson Meitei, both residents of Iroishemba in Imphal West district, were apprehended under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.

The seized gold and the arrested suspects were handed over to the Customs Division, Imphal for further legal proceedings.
