Imphal: A curfew has been imposed in Manipur's Churachandpur town, as a precautionary measure to maintain peace and order in the area.

The decision was announced by the Churachandpur District Magistrate, Dharun Kumar S, in an order issued on Wednesday.

The curfew, which took effect at 6 PM on October 16, will remain in place until 8 AM on October 18 or until further notice.

The order was issued based on reports from the local police indicating potential threats to public safety and security.

The curfew does not apply to essential services or government agencies involved in law enforcement.

However, all unauthorized gatherings of five or more people, as well as the carrying of weapons or potentially harmful objects, are strictly prohibited during this time.

Churachandpur district, situated along Tiddim Road, has been a focal point of the ongoing conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur.

This conflict, which began in May 2023, has resulted in significant loss of life and displacement of thousands of people.
