Manipur govt releases 5 lakh fingerlings in Loktak lake
Imphal: In a bid to address the state's growing demand for fish and reduce reliance on imports, the Manipur government has released approximately 5 lakh fish fingerlings into Loktak Lake and Takmu Lake on the occasion of the 35th Loktak Day celebrations.
Led by M. Asnikumar Singh, Chairman of the Loktak Development Authority, the fish stocking program saw the release of 3 lakh fingerlings (grass carp, rohu, and mrigal) into Loktak Lake.
Meanwhile, H. Balkrisna Singh, Director of Fisheries, Manipur, oversaw the release of 2 lakh fingerlings in Takmu Lake, with the participation of local fisherfolk, including women.
Despite Manipur being a non-vegetarian state with 98% of the population consuming fish, the state's annual fish production falls short of demand.
While the current production stands at 34,000 Metric Tonnes per annum, the annual consumption/requirement is 52,000 MT.
This deficit results in an estimated expenditure of Rs. 400 crores per annum on imported fish from outside the state.
To bridge this gap and promote sustainable fisheries, the government's initiative to stock Loktak Lake and Takmu Lake with fish fingerlings is a significant step.
These lakes are crucial ecosystems for fish breeding and growth, and their restoration and conservation are essential for ensuring a steady supply of fish for the state.
