Manipur: 10-month-old baby chokes to death on live fish in Thoubal

Imphal: A 10-month-old baby boy died after he tried to swallow a live fish in Thoubal, Manipur.

According to officials the toddler succumbed to asphyxiation after a live fish, locally known as Ngapemma (Trichogaster fasciata), became lodged in his throat.

The incident took place on Tuesday at the Khangabok Part-2 Meisnam Leikai of Thoubal.

Locals claimed that the baby's mother was distracted by a phone call during a brief power outage.

During this, the curious toddler attempted to swallow the live fish.

The fish became stuck in the baby's throat, causing him to choke, gasp, and cry intermittently.

Despite the mother's efforts to remove the fish, she was unsuccessful.

The baby was rushed to Thoubal district hospital and subsequently transferred to RIMS hospital in Imphal.

Doctors at RIMS hospital confirmed that the infant died due to breathing difficulties before arrival.

The fish was later removed from the baby's throat.
