AGARTALA: Animesh Debbarma, the opposition leader in Tripura, has recommended that the state government implement compulsory Kokborok language education in schools.

He emphasized the importance of teaching Kokborok to all students in Tripura, stating, “We should now embrace each other’s languages. The indigenous people of Tripura have embraced the Bengali language, and you will find very few people in our community who don’t understand Bengali.”

Debbarma stressed the need to strengthen unity between tribal and non-tribal communities by overcoming language barriers, urging the Tripura government to fulfil its responsibility in this regard.

He called upon Tripura chief minister Dr Manik Saha to initiate the printing of textbooks and question papers in Kokborok language using the Roman script.

“The government should consider the preferences of Kokborok speakers and learners,” Debbarma asserted.

“I advocate for the production of Kokborok textbooks and examination papers in both Roman and Bengali scripts, taking into account the prevalent viewpoint among the indigenous people of Tripura,” he added.
