Drug trafficking increases in Meghalaya due to Manipur unrest, says Paul Lyngdoh

Shillong: Meghalaya is facing a surge in illegal drug trafficking, primarily due to the ongoing unrest in neighboring Manipur, said Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh.

He said the state's strategic location near the Golden Triangle, a notorious drug production hub, has made it a prime target for drug smugglers.

According to Lyngdoh, the influx of drugs from Manipur has significantly complicated efforts to eradicate the menace within Meghalaya.

"We are determined to eliminate drug trafficking in our state," Lyngdoh stated on Thursday. "However, the shifting dynamics due to the Manipur crisis pose a substantial challenge."

To address the growing concern, Lyngdoh announced plans to visit the National Capital to personally brief Indian government leaders on the severity and scale of drug trafficking in Meghalaya.

He emphasized the urgent need for coordinated action to combat this pressing issue.
