SHILLONG: The Border Security Force (BSF) successfully thwarted an attempted infiltration by Bangladeshi nationals into Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district on Thursday.

The incident took place as a group of individuals attempted to cross the international border via the Ranikor riverine stretch, with the apparent intention of collecting boulders from Indian territory.

BSF officials reported that the group, using five to six boats, crossed the border on Wednesday afternoon.

Upon spotting the intruders, the BSF personnel initially issued warnings, instructing them to retreat.

However, when the group failed to heed the instructions, the BSF was forced to open fire, prompting the intruders to flee back across the border.

In response to recent political unrest in Bangladesh, particularly following the collapse of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government and the surge in student protests, the BSF has increased its vigilance along the India-Bangladesh border.

The Meghalaya government has also taken precautionary measures, including the imposition of a night curfew from 6 PM to 6 AM and the temporary suspension of activities at border haats.
