Assam students' body to honour ‘CAA protest martyrs’ across state tomorrow
Guwahati: Spearheading a renewed call for regional unity, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) will organise statewide homage programmes on 12 December to honour the martyrs of the anti-CAA movement. The main tribute event will be held at Hatigaon High School in Guwahati, where top AASU leaders will offer floral respects.
AASU Calls December 11 the ‘Black Day Against CAA’
AASU President Utpal Sarma, while confirming tomorrow’s programme, said, “The sacrifices of the CAA martyrs remind us that Assam’s identity and dignity cannot be compromised at any cost.”
He emphasised that the organisation will continue its democratic resistance because “CAA is unacceptable to the people of Assam and the entire Northeast.”
General Secretary Samiran Phukon added, “This is not just a remembrance. This is a reminder that Assam’s rights and future cannot be traded. The movement will continue with the same spirit.”
Districts, Anchalik and Regional Units Mobilised
As per AASU’s official circular, all district committees, regional bodies, and affiliated students’ units have been instructed to hold simultaneous homage events at 11 AM across Assam.
The circular mentions that the tribute is dedicated to Sam Stafford, Dipanjal Das, Ishwar Nayak, Abdul Alim, and all others who lost their lives during the anti-CAA uprising of 2019.
AASU has appealed to all units to observe the programme with discipline, dignity, and full black-flag protocol, marking the day as a collective protest.
“CAA Is Still a Threat”—AASU Hardens Stand
Addressing concerns over the Centre’s continuing push for CAA rules, Utpal Sarma warned,
“Neither Assam nor the Northeast can accept laws that threaten our cultural and linguistic existence. CAA is not just a law; it is an injustice to indigenous people.”
He further said that granting citizenship to outsiders based on religion will put immense pressure on the state’s land, language, and social fabric.
Central Committee Strategy Meeting Held
Sources confirmed that AASU’s central executive met today under the ‘Focusing on Tomorrow’ programme, reviewing political developments and preparing a stronger statewide mobilisation.
An insider told this correspondent, “If the Centre notifies CAA rules, the movement will intensify. Assam will witness a new phase of democratic resistance.”
“CAA Ami Namanu”—Mass Call Renewed
Along with the circular, AASU and youth volunteers circulated digital posters announcing 11 December as ‘Black Day’, urging people to raise black flags as a symbol of continued opposition.
The poster reads:
“CAA Ami Namanu.”
“Assam, Northeast will continue resisting this injustice.”
