Guwahati: A breach in the Jhanji River’s ring embankment triggered severe flooding in Assam's Teok, displacing hundreds of residents and inundating nearly ten villages.

The floodwaters destroyed homes, swept away livestock and belongings, and left a trail of destruction across the region.

Rising water levels submerged vast stretches of farmland and key roads, forcing families to evacuate to safer areas.

Local authorities and disaster response teams have ramped up their efforts, remaining on high alert as they continue to monitor the worsening situation.

Residents described the flood’s sudden onset, saying the water surged into their homes without warning, giving them no time to gather their possessions.

Many expressed anger at the administration, blaming poor maintenance of embankments and damaged roads for worsening the disaster.

Officials have advised people living in low-lying and vulnerable areas to stay alert, warning that water levels remain dangerously high and show no signs of receding soon.

The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of Assam’s flood control infrastructure, with renewed calls from locals and experts for immediate government action, stronger embankment systems, and long-term flood mitigation measures to prevent such recurring calamities.
