Dibrugarh: Amritpal Singh, the leader of Waris Punjab De, who is being incarcerated in Assam's Dibrugarh jail, filed his nomination as an independent candidate from Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency on Friday.

The nomination process was facilitated by his lawyer, Harjot Singh, along with his relative Sukhchain Singh and five others, who submitted the necessary documents to the District Returning Officer's office in Khadoor Sahib.

This move, confirmed by Amritpal Singh's lawyer Rajdev Singh Kalsa, and his uncle Sukhchain Singh, underscores his determination to contest the election independently.

Amritpal Singh's father, Tarsem Singh, expressed initial reluctance but acknowledged that if the decision to contest was supported by the community ('sangat'), he would respect their wishes.

Notably, if a detained candidate emerges victorious in the elections, they can be temporarily released from custody to take the oath, as per legal provisions.

Amritpal Singh's earlier statements regarding his stance on the Indian Constitution have attracted attention. He had expressed scepticism and asserted his democratic right to choose whether to acknowledge the Constitution.

Arrested under the National Security Act in April of the previous year, Amritpal Singh's nomination adds an intriguing dimension to the upcoming elections in Khadoor Sahib, scheduled for the seventh phase on June 1.
