Guwahati: A suspected drug trafficker was injured during a police operation in Mailkuchi village of Assam’s Barpeta district on Sunday.

Police sources said personnel from Barpeta Police fired at the suspect, identified as Anowar Hussain of Mailkuchi, after he allegedly tried to escape from custody.

The incident occurred around 2 am.

Earlier, on November 6, Tarabari Police had recovered 11 soap cases containing suspected heroin from an Alto vehicle, which the accused drug network reportedly abandoned before fleeing.

Anowar Hussain was detained by Tarabari Police on Saturday night for his suspected involvement in the same trafficking chain.

He was being taken along to help locate additional narcotics when he allegedly pushed police personnel and attempted to run away.

Officers then opened fire, injuring him in the left thigh.

Hussain is currently receiving treatment at Barpeta Medical College and Hospital.

Senior police officials, including Barpeta SP Sushanta Biswas Sharma, Additional SP (Crime) Bidyut Bikash Bora Bhuyan, and Sadar DSP Jitesh Barman, inspected the site and have begun an inquiry into the incident.
