Guwahati: A four-member dacoity gang from Assam's Barpeta was arrested on Saturday night in Guwahati when an EGPD team from Basistha Police Station, acting on specific intelligence, conducted a late-night search operation at N.R. Residency in Sijubari and cracked a multi-theft case involving robberies across the city and other districts.

“Another breakthrough for Guwahati Police,” confirmed the Police Commissionerate on Sunday after four dacoits involved in a series of thefts were apprehended from N.R. Residency in Sijubari.

Acting swiftly on credible intel inputs, an EGPD team from Basistha PS carried out the search operation that led to the arrest of the gang.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Ainur Hussain (31), Edul Ali (24), Mahibul Ali (32) and Bipul Ahmed (38)—all residents of Barpeta district.

Officials said the gang had been operating across Guwahati and neighbouring districts, targeting godowns, jewellery shops, and commercial establishments.

During the operation, police recovered and seized multiple stolen items, including two Exide batteries, a set of crime tools such as C-clamp, pliers, wrench and water pump plier, and a Maruti Suzuki Fronx (AS01-GG-3734) used as the getaway vehicle.

Police sources confirmed that during interrogation, the accused confessed to their involvement in several thefts and break-ins.

The confessions have helped police connect the group to a wider network of criminal activities.

Authorities stated that legal action has been initiated, and further investigation is underway to identify other associates and recover more stolen property.

The development has been acknowledged by CMO Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with Assam Police and the DGP, marking yet another coordinated effort to curb organised crime in the state.
