Assam: Evicted families in Digboi still await land, one year after eviction

Guwahati: Nearly one year after they were evicted from their homes on Railway and Forest land at Bogapani under Digboi police station in Assam's Tinsukia district, around 100 families are still waiting for the promised land for resettlement and due compensation.

On February 15, 2023, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) and the District Administration conducted an eviction drive in the area, displacing over 100 families. Following protests, the administration assured the evicted families of rehabilitation and compensation.

However, a year later, residents allege that the promises remain unfulfilled. "During the protests, officials assured us of land and compensation, but nothing has materialized," said an evicted resident who requested anonymity.

While some families reportedly received a one-time compensation of Rs 25,000, many haven't received anything. "There seems to be discrimination in releasing compensation," said the resident, claiming only 20-25 families received it.

On the other hand, locals in Bogapani alleged that at least 20 evicted families have again occupied the railway land, rebuilding houses in the area.

NF Railway officials remained unavailable for comment despite attempts to reach them.

Digboi MLA Suren Phukan, however, claims the administration has identified land for eligible families in the Ram Nagar area in Digboi. "Land for over 20 families is identified and will be officially handed over soon," he said.

Phukan also reiterated the government's stance on compensation, stating, "I, on behalf of the Chief Minister, last year distributed Rs 25,000 to evicted families, who are entitled to compensation."

Despite the MLA's statements, discrepancies in compensation distribution and the lack of clarity regarding land allocation raise concerns about the transparency of the process.
