Guwahati: Assam has etched its name in the annals of history as over 40 lakh Self-Help Group (SHG) members of the Northeast state took the pledge on a single day.

The Chief Electoral Officer, Assam along with the Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission and the Assam State Urban Livelihoods Mission while taking an initiative enlisted in the India Book of Records by making more than 40 lakh SHG members take the pledge on a single day on Wednesday (April 10) for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The initiative was aimed at upholding the democratic traditions of India by conducting the elections in a free, fair and peaceful manner. It also envisioned improving electoral participation not just in terms of numbers but also maintaining quality through effective implementation of the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP), a flagship programme of the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The SHG members taking active participation organised help desks at various government outlets in consultation with the district administration and district election offices.

In a meeting held at the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Assam, India Book of Records adjudicator Narvijay Yadav verified the procedure and announced the record for the successful completion of the pledge-taking event.
