Assam: Couple trampled to death by wild elephant in Goalpara

Guwahati: Man-elephant conflict is among the major issues in Assam often ends up in a tragic way.

On Friday night, a couple was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Lakhipur, Goalpara.

The couple, reportedly was on a motorcycle and were heading towards Hatigaon from Lakhipur.

However, on their way they encountered a herd of elephant.

It was exactly not known what provoked the elephants to attack but locals claimed that the couple was at a very close proximity to the herd.

One of the elephants attacked the couple as it may have felt threatened by their presence near the herd.

The couple died on the spot before any help could arrive.

The forest department has initiated an investigation into the incident.

It has been suspected that the elephants may have come down to the human habited areas in search of food.
