Assam: 21 state boxers reach third round of talent search competition

Guwahati: As many as 21 boxers from Assam have entered the third round of various weight categories in the junior and sub-junior divisions of the REC National Open Talent Search Boxing Championship currently being held in Assam’s state capital Guwahati.

Monika Doley and Liza Nath of Assam won their respective matches in the 44 kg category of the junior girls’ division.

On the other hand, Assam’s Prashant Rajbongshi and Deepankar Das secured victories in the boys’ junior 44 kg category, Himanshu Bora in 46 kg, Nipen Sinha in 54 kg, and Sahiman Newar in the 57 kg category thus advancing to the next round.

In the sub-junior girls’ category, Priyanka in 40 kg, Asmita Roy and Pabisha Sandikoi in 43 kg, Parismita Saikia, Premika Basumatary and Prithik Mushahary in 46 kg, and Rimpi Pegu in 49 kg secured victories.

In the sub-junior boys’ category, Aditya Rajbhar and Ayan Saikia in 40 kg, Lunmin Khongsa, Neeraj and Lakshyajit Chutia in 43 kg, Dhananjay Boro in 46 kg, and Lachit in 49 kg qualified for the next round by winning their respective bouts.

Prior to this, the competitions in the elite and youth divisions for both men and women were successfully completed.

Assam secured a total of 16 medals in various weight categories in the elite and youth divisions, including two gold medals, six silver medals, and eight bronze medals.

The competition - organised by the Assam Amateur Boxing Association (AABA) with support of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) - will conclude on September 30.
