Imphal: The National Highways (NHs) in strife-torn Manipur connecting with Myanmar, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Assam have become a hotbed for anti-social activities.

To counter these, a six-member delegation of Akhil Bhartiya Transport Association called on the Governor of Manipur Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday.

The team also submitted a memorandum to the governor.

The memorandum highlights on the day-to-day challenges and problems faced by the transporters of all goods, including essential commodities due to the critical situation prevailing around the NHs and highways of Manipur and the commodities price rise.

They informed the Governor about the insecure environment in the National Highways — 2 and 37 wherein extortion in the form of illegal taxes is being collected by self-styled groups/miscreants at various checkpoints reducing the NHs to the haunting grounds of anti-social activities.

They requested the Governor to look into the seriousness of the problem and the impending grim situation faced by the truck drivers, the transporters, as well as the general public of Manipur.

The team mentioned that during this ongoing ethnic clash in Manipur, the transporters have braved as warriors and ambassadors of the great nation to reach out to the remotest corner to avail of all the commodities.
