British couple asked to leave India over “Free Palestine” stickers
Guwahati: A British couple has been asked to leave India for allegedly pasting “Free Palestine” stickers at multiple locations in the temple town of Pushkar, authorities said on Monday.
Rajasthan police stated that Lewis Gabriel D and Anushi Emma Christine violated tourist visa rules by engaging in political activities, which are strictly prohibited under Indian law. The couple reportedly pasted stickers reading “Free Palestine. Boycott Israel” across the popular tourist town, prompting police action.
“Engaging in activities that disrespect other nations while on Indian soil is a clear violation of visa rules,” said Rajesh Meena, Additional Superintendent of Police. Speaking to India Today, he added, “We maintain strict surveillance over the activities of foreign nationals. Any violation of tourist visa conditions will attract strict action, including deportation and blacklisting.”
Police officials confirmed that the Criminal Investigation Department served a notice to the couple under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, revoking their visas and mandating their immediate departure from India.
Pushkar is a popular destination for Israeli tourists, many of whom visit after military service. The town currently hosts around 2,000 Israeli visitors, including those linked to Chabad, a global Hasidic Jewish movement, according to local media.
Calls to “free Palestine” have intensified following Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, which began in October 2023. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, destroyed homes, and left thousands in urgent need of medical attention. According to the Gaza health ministry, over 20,000 people have been injured, including more than 3,000 children, while the World Health Organization estimates more than 18,000 require treatment.
Despite a US-brokered ceasefire last October, Israeli strikes on Gaza have continued, with limited humanitarian exits allowed via the Rafah Crossing. Meanwhile, India has maintained a neutral stance, supporting a two-state solution while strengthening bilateral ties with Israel.
