GUWAHATI: The United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) has revoked the death sentence of alleged “Assam police spy” Manash Borgohain.

The decision to revoke the death sentence of “Assam police spy” Manash Borgohain was announce by the ULFA-I on Monday (February 19).

However, the Paresh Baruah-led outfit has ‘disqualified’ Manash Borgohain from the membership of ULFA-I for a period of five years.

He has, in fact, has been sentenced to one year of physical labour and four years of self-correction through “positive work culture”.

The offender will still enjoy all constitutional privileges of revolutionary fighters, the ULFA-I has informed in a statement.

ULFA-I claimed, “Manas Borgohain, a sub-inspector of the special branch of Assam police, has been actively serving since 2021. Notably, high-ranking police officials, including DGP GP Singh and DIG Partha Sarathi Mahanta, are implicated in this scheme.”

The outfit added: “Manas Chaliha, a notorious criminal and zonal officer of the special branch, disclosed that he and several other indigenous youths underwent training for the operation starting from June of the previous year. The training sessions took place at three locations: Nos 401, 409, and 207 at Royal Enclave Apartments, Ajanta Road, Beltola, Guwahati.

Furthermore, a trial was conducted on February 13 this year, during which, the investigation report and the confessions documented in the charge sheet were thoroughly examined. Despite being provided ample opportunities to refute the court's findings, the accused chose to plead guilty. This case strongly indicates the accused's pursuit of wealth and power, underscores the reprehensibility of deceit as a profession, and underscores the severity of treasonous acts against the organization.”
