Tripura tribal woman sells newborn for Rs 5000 due to poverty
Dhalai: In a distressing incident highlighting the severe economic challenges faced by vulnerable communities, Mormati Tripura, a 37-year-old tribal woman from Taraban Colony in the Gandacherra subdivision of Tripura's Dhalai district, sold her newborn daughter due to extreme poverty.
This desperate act came five months after the death of her husband.
Mormati gave birth at home on Wednesday.
Struggling to provide for her three other children amidst severe financial hardship, she sold her newborn daughter to a couple in Hezamara the following day for Rs 5000.
The heartbreaking situation came to public attention when opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhary shared a video on social media, prompting swift action from authorities.
An official explained that Mormati, already burdened with the responsibility of caring for her two sons and a daughter, likely felt she had no other option but to make this drastic decision.
Upon being alerted to the situation, local authorities acted quickly.
They retrieved the infant and reunited her with Mormati the next day.
Officials have assured that the family will receive ongoing support.
Necessary aid has been extended to ensure the well-being of both the mother and her children, aiming to prevent any such incidents in the future.
