Agartala: A 58-year-old man, Jaban Bhakta Jamatia, was allegedly beaten to death at Khupilong in Tripura’s Gomati district, police said on Wednesday.

Authorities suspect the attack may have been linked to superstitious beliefs.

According to the deceased’s wife and granddaughter, unknown assailants reportedly entered Jamatia’s home on Tuesday and vandalised household items.

Police said the attackers dragged him from his room and began assaulting him.

Jamatia initially escaped but was caught again, beaten with bamboo sticks and rods, and tied before being attacked further in the courtyard.

He was taken to a local hospital by family members and later referred to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala, where he died during treatment.

Police recovered bloodstained iron rods and bamboo sticks from the scene.

A case has been registered at Killa police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), but no arrests have been made so far.

Authorities noted that similar incidents have occurred in the state in recent months.

In recent months, Tripura has seen multiple violent incidents, including killings over suspected witchcraft, a road accident, and theft.
