Tripura: Kokborok scholar Naresh Chandra Debbarma conferred Padma Shri by President Murmu

Agartala: Renowned Kokborok scholar, author and educationist Naresh Chandra Debbarma was conferred the Padma Shri by President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremonial function held in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The prestigious civilian honour was awarded in recognition of Debbarma’s decades-long efforts towards the advancement, preservation and promotion of Kokborok language, literature and indigenous cultural heritage. Widely respected for his academic and literary contributions, he has played a significant role in strengthening the linguistic identity of Tripura’s indigenous communities.
The recognition has been welcomed across Tripura, with political leaders and members of the literary fraternity describing the achievement as a proud moment for the state. Many noted that the award acknowledges not only Debbarma’s personal accomplishments but also highlights the importance of safeguarding indigenous languages and traditions.
Congratulating the veteran scholar, Chief Minister Manik Saha said the honour reflects Debbarma’s lifelong dedication to the growth and preservation of Kokborok language and culture. He termed the award a matter of pride for the people of Tripura.
Several members of the state cabinet, BJP Tripura Pradesh president Abhishek Debroy and leaders from different organisations also extended their greetings, praising Debbarma’s invaluable contribution to literature, education and cultural preservation.
Known as one of the foremost figures in Kokborok literature, Debbarma’s work as a writer, linguist and educator has earned him widespread recognition, inspiring younger generations to engage with and promote indigenous languages and cultural traditions.
