Agartala: Debolina Roy has made history as Tripura’s first female Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) in the Indian Railways, a landmark achievement in women’s empowerment and representation in a highly demanding technical profession. She currently serves under the Kharagpur Division of the South Eastern Railway, and her journey reflects determination, skill, and the breaking of long-standing gender barriers.
A native of Agartala, Debolina laid the foundation for her technical career early on. She completed her schooling at Don Bosco School, where her interest in science and technology first took shape. She then earned a diploma in Electrical Engineering from the Tripura Institute of Technology (TIT), followed by a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Electrical Engineering from Gargi Memorial Institute of Technology (GMIT), Kolkata, in 2017.
Equipped with technical expertise and ambition, Debolina set her sights on the Indian Railways, a sector historically dominated by men. After clearing the competitive exams and completing rigorous training in technical operations and safety protocols, she joined as an ALP—a role that demands assisting in train operations, monitoring locomotive systems, ensuring adherence to safety standards, and managing high-pressure situations over long hours.
Over the past three years, Debolina has honed her skills on the tracks, earning professional recognition for her competence and dedication. Her achievement gained statewide attention in February 2026, when Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha felicitated her, praising her as an inspiration for young women to pursue challenging technical careers and break traditional barriers.
Debolina credits her success to the steadfast support of her parents, Ranabir Roy and Chandrani Bhattacharya, who encouraged her pursuit of higher education and stood by her decision to enter a demanding profession far from home. Her achievement represents the fulfillment of a long-held family dream: seeing their daughter independent, educated, and successful on her own terms.
Committed to inspiring others, Debolina actively encourages young women to explore careers in railways and other technical sectors, emphasizing that dedication, discipline, and self-confidence are key to overcoming societal stereotypes. She believes that increasing women’s participation in operational roles will strengthen institutions like the Indian Railways and foster a more inclusive workforce.
In a state where women’s opportunities in technical and operational roles are still emerging, Debolina Roy’s journey is a beacon of possibility. Her success is not only a personal triumph but also a symbol of a broader shift toward gender equality in India’s infrastructure and transport sectors. As she continues her career on the tracks, Debolina carries the aspirations of countless young women who now see the railways not just as passengers, but as professionals at the helm
