Agartala: Tripura Leader of Opposition and CPI-M Polit Bureau member Jitendra Chaudhury on Thursday confirmed that his party has filed a defamation suit against former Chief Minister and current BJP MP Biplab Kumar Deb for allegedly making false and derogatory statements against the principal opposition party.

Chaudhury explained that during a religious event in Gandhigram earlier this year, Deb accused the CPI-M of misappropriating donations from the Tripura Sundari Temple (Matabari) in Udaipur and replacing them with counterfeit items.

“The party immediately issued a statement condemning these allegations and requested an apology from Deb. When he failed to respond to multiple letters and a legal notice, we were left with no option but to pursue legal action,” Chaudhury said.

He described the remarks as “baseless, false, and deeply offensive to religious sentiments.” The defamation case, Chaudhury added, seeks to hold Deb accountable for intentionally attempting to tarnish the CPI-M’s image and mislead the public using unsubstantiated claims involving a revered religious site.

“The party cannot tolerate such malicious propaganda and has therefore approached the courts to protect its reputation,” he added.
