Agartala: Former President of Tripura Pradesh Congress and current chief of the Congress Legislative Party in the Tripura Assembly, Birajit Sinha, on Thursday launched a scathing attack against Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy, accusing him of aiding and abetting illegal immigration and violating the Representation of the People Act, which mandates disclosure of criminal antecedents.

Two days later, Roy led a massive protest rally against Sinha and alleged that the Congress leader was running a terror racket. The Congress leaders, in turn, threatened to take legal action against the BJP leader for 'corrupt practices.'

CPIM and Congress fought the last assembly elections together as constituents of the larger INDIA bloc, keeping Congress at its centre. While Congress won three seats, CPIM's tally now stands at 10 in the Tripura State Assembly.

“The Congress party is often blamed for illegal immigration, and the BJP always beats around the bush on such issues, but never speaks with concrete proof. I have concrete proof. An individual who has acquired an Indian identity as Sanjay Chakraborty is actually a Bangladeshi citizen. During the Durga Puja at the Minister’s house, he was appointed the head cook,” claimed Sinha.

The senior Congress leader also alleged that a few days ago, Chakraborty helped two female Bangladeshi nationals to cross the border, who were later detained by the Police.

“A minor girl and a lady came from Bangladesh with his help. Both of them were caught by the police. They have disclosed the name of Sanjay Chakraborty in the Police statement. He had started living in Srirampur village with a newly acquired identity as Dipak Chakraborty,” said Sinha.

Sinha furnished enough documents to support his claims. He said he had written a letter to Chief Minister Manik Saha and the DGP of Tripura Police, compiling all the information.

“I suspect he is not alone. He might be one of the several cases that have gone unnoticed,” claimed Sinha.

Slamming Roy for hiding his criminal antecedents, Sinha said, “An FIR is registered against Tinku Roy at West Agartala Police Station. The editor of Pratibadi Kalam newspaper, Anal Roy Chowdhury, lodged the FIR against him. He didn't disclose it in his poll affidavit. Furthermore, his Class XII pass degree was obtained from the Madhyabharat Board of Education located in Gwalior, which is not recognized by the government. People with a degree from such boards are not eligible for government jobs.”

According to Sinha, he would take legal action against Roy for not disclosing the criminal case lodged against him, which Sinha alleged is often treated as a corrupt practice under the Representation of the People Act.
