Agartala: The CPI(M)’s tribal wing, Gana Mukti Parishad (GMP), announced on Saturday that it will contest the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections. The party named the BJP as its main political opponent and Tipra Motha as a secondary rival.

At a press conference in Agartala, GMP general secretary Radha Charan Debbarma accused the BJP of reducing the limited autonomy the ADC enjoyed during the Left Front’s tenure. He also alleged that Tipra Motha, a partner in the state government, is siding with the BJP on ADC-related issues.

Debbarma said the ADC faces a financial crisis because the government has denied funds and allowed irregularities in its functioning. He added that corruption runs deep, and that elected members are leasing or taking over ADC land and transferring it to private parties. He also claimed that development initiatives from the Left Front’s tenure are being undermined.

He said the Left Front has adopted a 10-point charter of demands. The party will launch agitations to push these issues. Debbarma stated that residents in ADC areas have started protesting the misleading politics of the BJP and Tipra Motha. He expressed confidence that the Left Front will perform well in the upcoming elections.

GMP president Naresh Jamatia, who also attended the press conference, accused Tipra Motha of working with surrendered militant elements. He blamed the state government for failing to provide sufficient funds to the ADC. He added that authorities have not been monitoring the ADC’s functioning properly.

Jamatia said senior ministers and officials rarely visit the ADC headquarters to assess the situation. He added that proper reviews would have revealed the poor condition of the administration.

Meanwhile, the two-day 23rd central conference of the GMP concluded on Thursday at Agartala Town Hall. Leaders formed new organisational bodies during the conference. Jamatia was re-elected president of the state committee, while Radha Charan Debbarma and Pranab Debbarma became general secretaries.

The party constituted a 25-member executive committee and inducted six new members. It also formed a new state committee of 139 members, including two invitees, party leaders said.
