Agartala: Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the Customs Department, seized around 50,000 Yaba tablets valued at approximately Rs 5 crore from a vehicle in Tripura's Mungiakami area, officials said on Saturday.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the joint team intercepted a Mahindra XUV500 bearing registration number AS-01MB-5768 in the Mungiakami area, they said.

According to officials, the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled into a densely populated civilian area after noticing the security personnel.

A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the recovery of around 50,000 Yaba tablets with an estimated market value of Rs 5 crore, officials said.

The seized narcotic substance and the vehicle have been handed over to the Customs Department for further investigation and legal action, they added.

Officials said the operation was carried out jointly by the Assam Rifles and the Customs Department following specific intelligence regarding the movement of narcotic substances through the area.

No arrests have been made so far, and efforts are underway to trace the absconding driver, officials said.

Further investigation is underway to ascertain the source and intended destination of the contraband, they added.
